I was just testing out fast and effective ways to create space ships.  I used 3D canvas to blob in a quick general shap of the ship, then I took a screen shot of it in top-down view,  then i used photoshop to make it look all purty and texturized (even though i never textured the model to begin with)  I think it worked quite well - especially for just a quick test...

here are the steps i took... i also added 1 more step - I gave it more dramatic/dynamic lighting to help it look a tad more realistic

How fast and effective are your ways? What tools are involved?
Can you do this with free or cheap tools or do you need expensive stuff like Photoshop and some killer 3D modeller?

Anyway, feel free to post new piccies, I'm sure I'll find my pills  :D
