Drum Solo - Single Stoke Rolls - Single Stroke Warm Up

This clip is taken from the warm up exercise.  Here i'm mostly just messing around, but there is a core idea behind it.  Which is you play  groupings of  2, , 4 , 6 or 8 strokes per drum.  Slow to fast.

The second half of the short solo introduces the feet, generally in groups of the 6 or 8.  The common cliched patterns are the ones I tend to use, which  are  RLRLFF,   RLRLRLFF  and RLRLFFFF.   I've made some older videos showing.  You'll find them in many drum solos..

Anyway have fun !

This video expands upon a core idea shown in a previous video, which focused on a simple right hand melody played between the floor, rack tom and snare.    That pattern starts as 8th notes and then is then dress up a little by adding the left hand to form a 16th note stream.

In this video we expand upon the the original idea by moving the left hand around the kit.    This time we have some left against right styled patterns in alternate 1/16th note singles. 2 against 4, 3 against 4, and 5 against 3..

Here's the link to the previous video.

Drum Lesson - 8th note 3 feels on the bass drum

In today's drum pattern for a boring Sunday afternoon, we look at a some simple 8th note pattern on the bass drum creating a 3 feel. Later on we ramp the challenge up some what by moving a 16th notes on the bass drum.

3 feels appear in all type of music, so wrapping your mind around them can be very beneficial for the new drummer.

This video shows the workings of a left hand biased pattern that I find myself messing around it when jamming on the drums lately.   In other words, it's pattern I currently like,  which is something all drummers can no doubt relate to.

The actual pattern isn't overly complex or even a busy rhythm, it's all based  on  stream of 1/8th notes (in 4/4)  on the lead hand with accents on the opposite hand on counts A, E+A and 4.   In the video I'm not struictly keeping to that basic frame work and are randomly changing the accents from time to time, but those are accents that I'm generally thinking of when plaything this.

Well,  I hope you have some fun with this and that you'll no doubt take it further than I have here..

This was actually recorded about a month ago,  and was put together as  a quick test of some new video editing software on 19th,Nov,2016

This video takes the very new drummer through the basic building blocks of time keeping by breaking quarter notes down into 8th notes and then 16th note sub divisions. The focus here is on counting and the playing. Theory is that if you can get your counting working evenly then your limbs will follow. If you've been playing drums for a while then this lesson isn't going to be for you. It's pretty slow and pretty boring :)

This video takes the new drummer through some ideas for creating 16th based drum fills and grooves in 4/4 time. The ideas we cover include moving from an 8th note beat into a 16th note fill, 16th note disco beat and some light ghost note grooves.

If you've been playing drums for a while then you might find this a bit slow and boring... ;)

Drum Lesson: 4 Note Grouping RLRF in 16th notes

This lesson looks at a 4 note grouping between the hands and the your foot,  making it perfect for single bass drum players.  The pattern we'll be using is RLRF  (Right, Left, Right ,Foot) and played in a 16th note feel.  You can voice it all over the kit, but in this video we mainly look at ideas for creating fills between the snare and toms and later on some hi hat grooves.

Have Fun !

Drum Lesson: Hand and Foot Fill Pattern - RLRK RLKL RKRL KLRL

In this Drum Lesson we look at a Hand and Foot Fill Pattern for single bass drummers. The pattern is RLRK RLKL RKRL KLRL . (Right = Right Hand, L = Left hand, K = kick drum (or bass drum). It's made of 4 patterns stuck together. Each pattern is played as a block 4 1/16 note notes, replacing a bass drum with each count as we move through the pattern. So in count one we replace the A with a kick, in count two we replace the +, in count 3 we replace E and then finally the 4 re replaced. The idea is that when we replace a hand count with a kick (bass drum), the sticking doesn't change. So the parts can be mixed and matched together.

Drum Lesson - 8th Note to 16th Note transitions - KevsDrumShed

This drum lesson looks into a few simple idea for help new drummer maintain their consistency while moving between a basic 4/4 drum beat and 8th note and 16th note fills on the snare drum and around the toms.  It was originally created for a fellow drummer on a facebook drumming group, but I thought i'd make it public for other new drummers too.

Don't forget to like and subscribe so we can make more simple low tech drum lessons also.

Drum Fill - RLRF RLRL two beat Drum Lesson

In this drum lesson we take a look at two beat fill and it's four beat brother.

The opening fill is in 16th notes and is played RLRF RLRL.   So it boils down to replacing the ah count in beat three with a bass drum in a two beat group of single stroke 16th notes.

The second version is based around RLRF RLRF RLRF RLR-    This version is really just orchestrated around the kit in an interesting way.    Generally trying to hide that fact that's the same pattern repeating.
