Moving up a file tree?

I may be being stupid but...
If i record the current dir  in a string   with     cd$=currentdir$()

how can i change the filepath to go up a level in the directories e.g.  cd2$=cd$+"..\"

cd$=currentdir$()
cd cd$+"/.."
