Challenge #24 - Easter Week Mini Game Challenge 2011

In the spirit of a little Easter holiday fun, we're setting the PlayBASIC community a week long design and programming challenge.  The objective here is to cut through the fat and get to the core of your game idea fast, without the inevitable feature creep.   So the game designer needs to formulate their concept, then build a working prototype of the game within 7 days or less.   (16th/April/2011  -   24th/April/2011)

This programming portion of this challenge has ended and voting is now under way.
To cast your vote, head over to   Easter Week Mini Game Challenge 2011 Voting
 (Voting Closed)

 Game Requirements:

+ The game must be Easter themed, meaning that it should use Easter Eggs and or the Easter bunny as the primary character(s).   Please refrain from using any religious themes, this will not be tolerated!

+ The game must feature a GOLD coloured Easter egg somewhere.

+ The game must include a title/menu page (even if the only options are Play & Quit)

+ The game must be playable by a single person on a single computer, so games with computer controlled characters will need some form of AI.

+ The game can use any control system combination the designer prefers  (Key / Mouse / Joypad), however if you choose joypad as the primary control device, make sure it's playable via keyboard or mouse also. (Not everybody has one).

+ Artwork - submissions have a size requirement (listed Bellow), so  artwork need only be suitable, high quality artwork isn't necessarily required.   (Art = 1-5 Votes awarded by UnderwareDesign.com)

     - Music & Sound - The game doesn't necessarily have to include music, but some sound effects would be nice.  (Music = +1 votes, Sound =+ 1-5 Votes. Awards by UnderwareDesign.com)

+ Blogs - Each contestant is required to start a WIP (Work In Progress) thread in the Show Case board plotting their progress over the week.

+ Existing Works - In an effort to maintain some fairness, we'd prefer entries be written from scratch  rather than some re-skinned existing work.  (Expect -10 votes for )

Well, you've got lots to do and not much time to do it, so get those fingers typing !

Note: If you need to ask for a clarification, please ask them in this thread.   Do not PM or email them to me.

Dead Line

Begins -> Saturday 16th Of April  (Competition Is complete)
Closes -> Sunday 24th Of April (11:59 PM / MIDNIGHT Melbourne Australia)    See Current Time In Melbourne

This competition is now complete. Thanks to all participants...

Judging

     * At the close of the challenge, the community will be given a week to vote upon the best all round entry.  That's assuming there's more than one entry.

I really like the prize! That's very generous and could come in really handy.

Is it okay to compile the program and offer it elsewhere, or do you want it so the source code is only available here?

You can do whatever you like with it after the challenge, it's your game...  The whole idea of making the challenges open source, is purely to help others gain some perspective on how other real life members go about programming a game.

Can you clarify the close day? You have "Saturday 24th Of April". Did you mean Saturday the 23rd or Sunday the 24th?

kevin

Originally it was to be sat -> sat, making it 7 days, but during writing that was extended out to 7 and 1/2 days to help compensate for different time zones.   That's been extended again  from midday to midnight on the Sunday the 24th, making it a full 8 days in our time zone.   Check the time in Melbourne link to get an idea of how long is left.  It's currently 1:34PM on tuesday, so there's about 5 and 1/2 days left.

Submission: EGG HUNT

HOW TO PLAY

This game is played using the mouse.

Click on "HUNT" to start or "QUIT" to exit.

A background image is displayed and a circle moves around the screen to choose an egg from the image. Once the egg is chosen, it is displayed in a circle at the bottom-left of the screen.

An egg-shaped cursor and a 30-second timer appear. After three seconds, the timer (in the upper right hand corner) starts to count down to zero. The player can now move the egg-shaped cursor to try to find the part on the background image that matches the egg in the circle.

The player needs to click the left or right mouse button when he/she thinks the egg outlined by the cursor matches the egg in the circle. If the player is wrong, an X appears on the cursor. If the player is right, the time it took to find the egg is shown inside the egg cursor, and the next egg is chosen.

The player needs to try and find a dozen eggs in the image before the game ends. At the end of the game, the location of each egg is shown and the player is awarded either a golden, silver or bronze egg depending on the total time it took to find all twelve eggs.

Press the ESC key to quit during the game.

The player can add 800x600 PNG or JPEG image files to the "egg hunt images" folder, and the game may load the image randomly at the start of a new game.

EDIT: I originally attached the wrong file (it contained an image that was not public domain). The final file with all public domain images is now attached.

I didn't even think to post screenshots, thanks for adding them to the post. Next time I'll take care of it.

Instructions for play are included in the file "EGG HUNT How To Play.txt" found in the zip archive. Here is that text for those who want to know more about the game before downloading...

Actually, I'll go ahead and add these to the post with the screenshots.

Kevin, are the people who submitted games allowed to vote?
